John Mayes

I live in central Wellington, New Zealand and, almost at my 70th birthday, noticing how much family history has been lost in recent years. I am seeking to do what I can to preserve what is left and have been helped immensely in this by using the freely available work of others particularly related to the United Kingdom, India and New Zealand. So, while continuing to research my own family genealogy, I am keen to assist in making new material, particularly from the Wellington and Nelson areas, available to others. The numbers do seem to be rather daunting but I am interested in making a substantial contribution. Most of my family originates in the United Kingdom and my father’s side were involved in military endeavours in India from the mid 1980’s until the early 20th century. From there several family members emigrated to Nelson, New Zealand (a particularly good choice given the climate). I plan to spend some time on site researching the Nelson connection soon and could easily include photographing war graves of interest at the same time.
