My great uncle, Rifleman Hugh Devlin, S/33611 Rifle Brigade, was born in the pit village of Auchenstarry Row, Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire in 1890 The son of Hugh Devlin and Mary Boyle and husband of Annie Traynor, Hugh, like his father and grandfather, was a coalminer. He had served with the Royal Scots before enlisting in Alloa, Clackmannanshire Initially he enlisted in the RASC with the number, T40365223(HT) Horse Transport. His RASC Regimental Number is only two digits away from that of his oldest brother, my grandfather, Denis Devlin, so I reckon we can safely assume that both brothers enlisted on that same day in Alloa Hugh was killed in action on the 28th March 1918 First Battle of Arras- at the beginning of, The German Spring Offensive His younger brother, Michael Devlin,Pte 2nd Btn Black Watch was killed in action in Arsuf, Palestine on the 10th June 1918 It is assumed that Hugh's service record was amongst those destroyed during the Blitz on London in 1940 Submitted by James Devlin McIvor
